Leading pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors are facing even greater scrutiny today with the advent of “pedigree” laws at the state level. In this realm, pedigree is defined
as an electronic record containing all pertinent information for a prescribed medication at the item level from its manufacture through the supply chain and into the hands of the customer.
There is a great deal of debate currently with regard to the optimal means for recording and transmitting this vital information; radio frequency identification (RFID) is seen as the
wave of the future, but two-dimensional bar code is also being considered for reasons of economy.
HK Systems is front and center in this arena, having integrated the systems that capture, record and transmit this vital information for half of all the drugs on the market
that are tracked at the item level. Additional benefits from this degree of data capture include tighter controls against counterfeiting, diversion and pilferage.
The California pedigree law that went into effect as of January 1, 2009. While this law will only govern transactions within California, it is anticipated that other states
as well as the Federal Government will begin to enact similar legislation.
HK Systems is well-positioned through our project experience with leading pharma manufacturers and distributors to continue to design and implement effective solutions to address
the distribution challenges posed by this pending legislation.
